Road to the Bench Academy - Class II (2022)

Are you interested in becoming a judge? Join the Palm Beach County Bar Association in our new Road to the Bench Academy. The Academy is a non-partisan training and mentorship program to encourage diversity on the bench. Whether you’re ready to seek a judicial seat today or in the future, the Academy aims to prepare you. Participants will receive training, courses on various topics related to the appointment and election process to become a judge. 

All applications must be received on or before January 24, 2022, by 5:00 p.m. (EST). Applicants must include the following required documents along with your application: Professional Resume and Current Professional Headshot (High resolution in JPEG). The participation fee for the Academy is $100 for private practice attorneys and $50 for public interest/government attorneys. Two program participation scholarships will be awarded to applicants who have financial need in order to participate in the Academy.

ACADEMY AGENDA & TRAINING DATES

Session 1: “Why We are here: Importance of Encouraging a Diverse Bench”

  • February 15, 2022, 6:00 p.m. via Zoom
  • Academy kick-off session. Brief overview of the purpose of the program, introductions, and general qualifications to become a judge.
  • Panelists:  Judge Renatha Francis, Judge Bradley Harper, Ret. Judge Ilona Holmes, Judge James Nutt, Debra Jenks. 

Session 2: “Building Your Brand, Who Are You”

  • February 22, 2022, 6:00 p.m. via Zoom
  • Each participant will do a personal narrative exercise and self-assessment regarding running a campaign or seeking an appointment.
  • Panelists: David Aronberg, Judge Maxine Cheesman, Judge Luis Delgado, Judge Samantha Schosberg-Feuer, Judge Sarah Shullman, Davicka Thompson 

Session 3: “Elements of An Effective and Successful JNC Application” 

  • March 1, 2022, 6:00 p.m. via Zoom
  • Overview of the JNC process and discussion on the nuts and bolts of the JNC application.
  • Panelists: Judge April Bristow, Judge Howard Coates, Judge Bradley Harper, Judge Laura Laurie, Judge John J. Parnofiello, Jared Gillman, Robert Harvey, Adam Weisholtz

Session 4: “So, You’ve Applied, What’s Next?” 

  • March 8, 2022, 6:00 p.m. via Zoom
  • Discussion on how to put your best foot forward in the JNC and Governor’s office interviews.
  • Panelists: Judge Sheri Collins, Judge Paige Gilman, Gordon Dieterle 

Session 5: “Getting Ready to Run a Judicial Campaign”

  • March 15, 2022, 6:00 p.m. via Zoom
  • Discussion on the key elements to run for the judiciary and how to put together your team. Review of the judicial canons and overview of fundraising for judicial candidates.
  • Panelists: Judge Natasha DePrimo, Judge Sarah Willis, Judge Ashley Zuckerman, Richard Giorgio, Rick Asnani

Session 6: “Your Network is Your Net Worth” 

  • March 22, 2022, 6:00 p.m. via Zoom
  • Overview of the importance of outreach and networking.
  • Panelists: Judge Carolyn Bell, Sia Baker-Barnes, Michael Gelfand, Salesia Smith-Gordon
